St. Anne’s School of Annapolis is hiring a full-time World Languages and Cultures (WLC) Teacher who will instruct, guide, and supervise Sixth-Eighth Grade students in Spanish and French in a warm, nurturing environment that is student centered and supports differentiated instruction. With the support of the Head of Upper School (Fifth-Eighth Grade), this teacher will establish a safe and caring classroom community in which each child’s strengths, opinions, actions, and thoughts are valued. St. Anne’s School seeks life-long learners who possess the positive professionalism, community-mindedness, openness, engagement, and warmth that characterizes our entire staff.
World Languages and Cultures is a comprehensive world language course designed to equip Sixth-Eighth Grade students with a strong foundation in vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation, enabling effective oral and written communication in Spanish or French. Spanish and French are taught concurrently at each grade level, using a digital platform for grammar and vocabulary instruction, allowing the teacher to differentiate instruction by content and for students to share information about the cultures they study deeply. Using an exploratory inquiry-to-action model, we teach students to increase competencies in the target language by improving listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
Our goal is for all students to improve language proficiency, embrace creativity, and honor and respect global cultures in a way that is ultimately purpose-driven.
For this course, we partner with World Leadership School to “reimagine learning and create next generation leaders.”
Program Details
This course explores three overarching questions:
- How does one communicate effectively in a language, based on purpose, task, and audience and using appropriate vocabulary and conventions?
- What are the most important elements of grammar that are necessary for further study of the language?
- How does the study of the cultures where the target language is spoken (Spanish or French) increase student understanding of the world around them?
Units of Study
Through a series of projects and blended learning experiences, students explore units in Spanish or French such as: Greetings and Introductions, Work and School, Shopping, Travel, Past and Future, Friends and Social Life, Dining and Vacation, Home and Health, Life and the World, etc. Units of study are typically organized around a project based learning (PBL) assessment so that students are learning how to communicate in real world situations using the target language. In addition, each student will focus on one country or cultural area of the world so that he/she/they gain a deeper understanding of that culture, while all students, during project presentations, are exposed to more global perspectives.
Costa Rica Trip
Each spring, all seventh grade students have the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica to the World Leadership School’s program site in the rainforest in Chilamate. This multi-day trip includes cultural activities, sports, and community engagement rotations. The WLC teacher is expected to be one of the chaperones for the trip.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan for and assess Spanish and French acquisition skills in students while introducing a variety of cultures and project based learning experiences in Sixth-Eighth Grade classes
- Monitor and support student language acquisition, including differentiating by language and skill level, by using a blended-learning model for web-based instruction and assessment
- Maintain proactive communication with parents about student progress, including through parent-teacher conferences, report cards, and portfolio conferences
- Plan and lead advisory meetings with a group of 8-12 students, and partner with grade-level co-advisors for advisory curricula
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development opportunities, and school events outside the life of the classroom
- Chaperone field trips, including the Seventh Grade Costa Rica trip and an overnight trip with the grade level advisory team
- Complete lunch, recess, and other duties as assigned
- Work closely and collaboratively with colleagues and administrators to ensure each child’s success
- Embrace the St. Anne’s School mission and educational philosophy
Minimum Requirements:
- 3+ years teaching middle school French and Spanish, preferably in an independent school setting
- Bachelor’s Degree in teaching world languages or related field; Master's Degree preferred
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and classroom management skills
- Knowledge of current research and best practices in brain-based teaching and learning
